Our Philosophy of Education

Our vision for education works from the inside-out. That inspires students to cultivate their inner life – their curiosity, love of learning, and the joy of being known in a safe and accepting community – and allow that to overflow into outward actions of working hard to learn, excel, and grow. CHCA aims to create an environment where children can feel safe, respected, loved, known, and valued. We aim to create an atmosphere where the child feels accepted just as he is. Charlotte Mason taught that the ideal educational atmosphere is one in which the child does not have to prove himself, pass a test, or win approval but is valued and unique simply because he is loved and valued by God. A child in this kind of atmosphere feels safe to take risks and make mistakes and thus, grow from them. An atmosphere of safety and hope, can grow a spirit of courage. The security that comes from feeling accepted, can dissolve fears of failure and encourage even greater pursuits of creativity, imagination, and growth. Where trust and love exist in relationships, the atmosphere is relaxed instead of tense or stressful. We will also teach students that healthy order, discipline, and authority all have their place and can be good gifts from God. We will strive to be more concerned with mastery of skill than passing an assessment of proficiency. Understanding that children have different learning needs, we will strive to adjust to their needs where possible.

Our first priority is to open the door to the knowledge of God. We strive to teach with our words and by our example. By committing to having our own hearts, lips, and actions, be full of this passion and purpose. To take care that the very “ring of our voices and carriage of our heads” displays our devotion and commitment to CHCA’s values. To be careful that our instruction not be overenthusiastic, trite, or wearisome, but joyful, honest, and genuine. We will aim to not only talk or lecture, but to serve, give, and model what we believe in a meaningful way.

There is so much in the world right now that could naturally lead us to despair and darkness, but we have not been left without hope. We want to hold out timeless truths to students and stir their hearts to hopeful action, obedience, and devotion.

We will aim to help students be able to know the Bible, discern the truth, judge ideas comprehensively, listen, and be in touch with the world around them. We will teach that a person’s worth is not based on what they can do, what their education, salary, or reputation is, but that every human has been created in the image of God, imago dei, and so is endowed with sacred worth.
